Scholarships and financial aid
For the Doctoral Student
The majority of funding for PhDs comes from national fellowships (Ministry of Education) allocated to the doctoral school and region (Region of Brittany fellowships) for subjects corresponding to the fields covered at the VAS Doctoral School. More than 30 such fellowships are awarded each year.
The greater part of these fellowships are awarded during the month of July, as a result of the Annual Competitive Admissions Process. Other specific scholarships which become available around the time of the admissions process are included as well.
For the Host Laboratory
The research conducted by the doctoral student is an integral part of the work of the host laboratory. The necessary materials, equipment and installations are provided by the lab as part of the moral contract (Thesis Charter) between the two parties.
Some funding for the work the student is pursing in the host lab, commonly known as “lab fees,” are possible, but rather infrequent. They are generally paid for by the business or institution which has ordered the research. This is often the case for students with CIFRE fellowships or international students working with international organizations. These questions vary according to the laboratory.
The Doctoral Contract is a contract signed by the student and the establishment which has recruited him/her to complete a PhD. This contract is for 3 years, which corresponds to the normal time allotted for completion of a doctorate. It includes all funding conditions for the 3-year term.
The Doctoral Contract is based on the Decree of April 23rd, 2009.
